Curse of the Egyptian Goddess is a contemporary paranormal romance novel which incorporates intricate mythology into a modern setting. The story's heroine, Cleo, is a flawed but fascinating woman who has the misfortune of being the target of an ancient curse, which is linked to the serpent necklace she wears about her throat. Because of the curse people involved with Cleo, those who touch her, die of strangulation. As a result, she carries the immense guilt of having caused the deaths of her entire family and she remains a menace to anyone who dares get too close to her. To make matters worse, she suffers from regular cuddle sessions with a giant invisible constrictor snake that attempts to squeeze the life out of her, leaving her covered in bruises. Cleo actively shuns human contact and drowns her misery in booze. The addict aspect of her personality is distasteful, although understandable, given the wretchedness of her existence.Calvin was Cleo's childhood friend and the recipient of a different but complimentary necklace bearing the symbol of a cat. Unfortunately, Calvin starts out acting like a jerk to the extent that the reader struggles to find something likeable or sympathetic about him. Considering that his biggest complaint is being transformed into a cat, the guy's bad attitude is really out of proportion to the chip on his shoulder. (He gets to be a freaking tiger! How cool is that?) As a point in his favor, he does manage to redeem himself as the tale progresses and eventually becomes a hero worth rooting for.
I really liked the investigative mystery portion of the story. An exciting sense of suspense builds as Cleo and Calvin desperately search for a way to end their curses. A determined detective who is gunning for Cleo adds the right touch of external conflict. There are a few other supporting cast characters but Detective Cade is far and away the best and most interesting of them. I actually wanted to know more about him and I'm hoping he appears again at some point in the series.
I liked Cleo and Calvin together. They have great chemistry and are emotionally compelling. Love scenes are sensual. The story uses clean, direct language and the editing is excellent. The pacing remained steady and consistent throughout, carrying the reader toward the surprising conclusion.
All in all, I'd recommend Curse of the Egyptian Goddess for anyone looking for an intriguing tale involving Egyptian mythology set in the modern world. I believe the "curse" theme is an absolutely fantastic premise for a series and I'm looking forward to seeing what Lisa Rayns does next.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a novella so its not very long, but unlike some I've read in the past it wasn't rushed or condensed. I felt a connection with the characters as I read about their lives. It stars a woman named Emma Patrix and her first love Calvin who are both cursed. One turns into a cat and one gets attacked by a giant snake. I thought that the characters were well developed and the story was interesting. Its got a bit of romance in it as well which I thought made the characters a bit more dynamic. I can't wait to read more from Lisa Rayns.
I loved this novella!! I've been in a bit of a reading rut lately where all the books were too predictable and the characters are carbon copies of characters from other books but Curse of the Egyptian Goddess changed that for me.
Ms Ryans writes a story like none I've ever read, dealing with a couple of kids who come across cursed necklaces in Egypt. The quickly story jumps ahead to Emma's cursed adult life that she spends hammered out of her mind--her way of avoiding the pain on so many levels.
The Curse of the Egyptian Goddess is well written and filled with lots of steam, excitement, and twist that keeps you turning the page. Don't pass this great novella up!!
This was a novella, so it was a rather quick read. While there were moments that I enjoyed, and I definitely liked Emma and Calvin's character, there were moments that I didn't connect with the story. I think I liked the idea of the story more than the story itself. I enjoyed Calvin and Emma's romance and situation; the ending changed everything for me. The romance was cut off at a pretty hot moment and there wasn't a satisfying resolution at the end.
I hated the ending and felt that it was just a way to end the story instead of a place that the author arrived at. I like all different types of ending, they don't have to be the kind where everything is happy, I only request that they come naturally; happy or sad. I think it would help if the story was fleshed out a little more.
The Curse of the Egyptian Goddess by Lisa Raynes was a very good novella. Poor Cleo was destined to live a life alone unless the curse of her necklace could be broken. 2 children Cleo and Calvin growing up together make the mistake of taking 2 necklaces from a dig site set their lives on a spiral affect. She loses everyone she loves in the world and starts drinking heavily to escape her life. Then she finds Calvin and hope is something tt she may have a future if the curses could be broken. 5 stars excellent read.
I am a mild Egypt buff (have seen the King Tut exhibit twice) and have always been fascinated by the era of pharaohs, pyramids and the pantheon of ancient Egyptian religion, so I really looked forward to reading this book. The novella was such a fun read. It's not deep or thought-provoking, but it contains just the right amount of light banter, sexual tension and suspense to be thoroughly entertaining. I especially enjoyed the twists and turns the story took.

This story had me hooked from the beginning. I love Egyptology and fully appreciated its integration into the story. Cursed as kids; Calvin and Cleo live their lives apart from one another. Both tormented until they meet up again as adults, which only proves to be disastrous until they find a common goal--breaking the curse. I look forward to Ms. Rayns next writing endeavor.
